Polyurethane Corbels in a Southwest Florida Home

Corbels as a Transition Between Surfaces

Corbels do quiet work. They sit where one surface meets another and give the eye a reason for the change. Done well, nobody points at them. Done badly, or done in a material that cannot handle the climate, they become the thing everyone notices.

This Southwest Florida home uses high-density polyurethane corbels from Diamond Resin Products at those junctions. Where a projection meets a wall, where an overhang begins, where a horizontal plane needs visual support underneath it, the corbel explains the change and makes it look considered.

Placement follows those junctions rather than being distributed for decoration. The result is a facade where the detail feels structural even where it is not carrying load.

Depth Is What Makes a Corbel Read

What registers from the street is shadow. A shallow profile disappears into the wall under Florida sun, especially at midday when the light comes almost straight down. Depth is what keeps the element visible.

The profiles here have enough projection and enough relief in the scroll to throw a defined shadow across the wall behind them. Matching profile depth to viewing distance is the decision that determines whether the detail lands at all.

Salt Air, Humidity, and What the Paint Has to Do

Southwest Florida is hard on architectural wood. Humidity moves it. Salt air accelerates the breakdown of the finish. Termites and carpenter ants find it. A wood corbel on an exterior wall in this region is a maintenance schedule, and the schedule never gets shorter.

High-density polyurethane removes that category of problem. The material is closed cell and monolithic, solid all the way through rather than a shell over a core, and it will not split, warp, crack, or rot. Moisture does not penetrate it and insects have no interest in it. Diamond Resin Products has manufactured for this climate out of Fort Myers since 2005, so the material was developed against exactly these conditions.

Corbels can be primed and painted with quality latex, and the surface accepts faux finishes for matching wood tones elsewhere on the house. Because the substrate does not move with humidity, that paint is not fighting a surface expanding and contracting through the season. Coatings hold longer than they do on exterior wood trim in the same conditions, which is where most of the ongoing maintenance on a facade like this would otherwise go.

Match a Corbel Profile to Your Facade

Corbel profiles vary widely in projection, scroll detail, and scale, and the right choice depends on where the piece sits and how far away it will be seen from.

Browse the full range on our corbels page, or contact our office with photos of the elevation and we will suggest profiles that suit the architecture.
