This project brought a fireplace mantel to the lanai of a home in the Caymas community in Naples. In Southwest Florida the lanai does the work of a second living room, and on this home the fireplace wall is where that room comes together.
The mantel gives the fireplace a defined horizontal line and a sense of finish, turning the surround into the centerpiece the rest of the lanai is arranged around.
Interior Detail, Reimagined for the Lanai
A mantel on a lanai is held to the same standard as one indoors. It is seen up close every day, so it has to read as real wood at conversation distance, not just from across the yard.
Our fireplace mantels share the textures and finishes of our beam line, and those textures are taken from actual wood species. That gives the lanai the grain and warmth of a timber mantel without asking a timber mantel to survive outdoors.
Built for the Conditions of Outdoor Living
Covered does not mean protected. Air moves freely across a lanai, so the mantel lives in the same humidity as the rest of the outdoors, catches blowing rain during summer storms, and cycles through heat every time the fireplace is lit.
High-density polyurethane is indifferent to all of it. The material resists moisture, insects, warping, splitting, cracking, and rot, so the mantel on this Caymas lanai will not need sanding, sealing, or replacement to keep the look it had on install day.
