Sizing Beams to a Two Story Great Room

A great room is the hardest ceiling in the house to get right. The volume that makes the room feel generous also leaves a large flat plane overhead with nothing holding it. In this Bonita Springs home the finishes at eye level were already resolved, and the ceiling was the piece still reading as unfinished.

Select cypress texture beams from Diamond Resin Products gave that plane a structure, and the decision that mattered most was proportion. A beam that looks generous in a standard eight foot room disappears when it is installed twenty feet up. Undersized beams read as trim. Oversized beams close the volume back in and undo the reason the room was built tall in the first place.

The beams here were specified against the actual span and ceiling height rather than fitted to whatever dimension was closest at hand. Diamond Resin Products produces beams across a wide range of profile depths, widths, and lengths, so sizing stays a design decision instead of becoming a compromise.

Spacing carried as much weight as size. The layout follows the structure of the room and lines up with sightlines from the main living area, so the ceiling reads as intentional rather than decorated after the fact.

Select Cypress in a Room Full of Daylight

Select cypress is one of several textures available, and it performs particularly well on long runs at height. The grain is defined enough to register from across a room without turning busy, and the surface carries the irregularity of milled cypress rather than the repeating pattern that usually gives away a molded product. Because every beam is cast from high-density polyurethane, that texture is part of the material rather than a coating applied to it.

Great rooms in this part of the state are built around light. Sliders, transoms, and clerestory glass push a lot of daylight into the space, and that light travels across the ceiling through the course of the day. Raking light picks up the grain in the morning and flattens at midday, giving the ceiling a depth that a painted flat surface cannot produce.

Color was chosen with enough contrast against the ceiling to keep that effect visible in every light condition, while still sitting alongside the wall paint rather than fighting it. The same daylight is unforgiving of material that fades, yellows, or moves, and high-density polyurethane holds its dimension and its finish through the humidity swings and heat of a Southwest Florida summer.

What Lightweight Material Changes About a High Ceiling Install

Running solid timber at this height brings staging, lifting equipment, and structural planning to carry the load. High-density polyurethane beams weigh a fraction of what solid wood does, so the install crew works with standard scaffolding and standard fasteners.

The beams cut and trim with tools a trim carpenter already owns, and cut ends still match the face because the texture runs through the material. They mount over a cleat fastened into the framing, then fasten off, which keeps the process straightforward even on a vaulted plane where every measurement is a reach.

For the builder, that means the ceiling never becomes its own phase of the job. The full range of profiles, textures, and sizes is available on the Beams category page.

Find the Right Beam Profile for Your Ceiling

We manufacture beams across a wide range of profiles, textures, and dimensions, which makes it possible to match a ceiling rather than design around a stock size. Select cypress is one of several textures available, alongside hand hewn, Italian farmhouse, and pecky cypress.

Browse the full selection on our beams page, or send us your ceiling plan and our estimating department will recommend profiles, spacing, and quantities.
